Community calendar for June 13

Living With Cancer Group has been cancelled for June and will meet on Wednesday, July 8, at 6 p.m. at the Ely Community Building. All cancer patients, survivors, family members, friends or those just wanting more information are welcomed and encouraged to join the group.

A dedication of the Ely Miners Memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at the Pioneer Mine. This will be the unveiling of a memorial with over 200 names of men who died in Ely mines. Family members of those who perished are being asked to attend and be recognized. The public is invited to attend.

Veterans on the Lake Resort Ely (VOTL) will be holding a flag ceremony on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14 at 1 p.m. This ceremony is to dedicate VOTL’s recently completed Avenue of Service flags. Public is invited and veterans are encouraged to attend as your service flag will be honored and dedicated. In planning and fundraising for over a year, it took the coordinated efforts of veterans from the Fleet Reserve Association, VFW, American Legion and Veterans of Steel for this project to reach fruition. Light refreshments will be served after the dedication ceremony.

At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m. the program will be all about bears with the North American Bear Center. Join staff from the North American Bear Center to learn about basic bear biology and how to co-exist with them in our area. This program is in cooperation with the North American Bear Center.

At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, June 17 at 11 a.m. the program will be Hey, It’s a Holiday: Great Outdoors Month. Join us outside -rain or shine- for some great outdoor activities. Dress for the weather, we will be outside unless there is lightning. Jessie will have outdoor activities planned for any kind of weather. Pre-register so we know how many to set up for. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

At the Ely Public Library on Thursday, June 18 at noon the program will be Deadly Knits – for teens and adults. Knit-along (or crochet) while we listen to and discuss a true crime podcast. If you have a project you would like to share or work on, bring it along and you can work on it in the company of others! This is a welcoming environment where you can ask questions and share tips. Registration not required. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

The June meeting of Ely P.E.O. Chapter FD will be held on Thursday, June 18 at Grace Lutheran Church. Please notice the time change to evening meetings. Social will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the program and business meeting to follow. Visiting members are welcome. Call program chair, Kathy Champa, 218-220-0969, with any questions.

The Unforgettables! the new, all inclusive, dementia friendly choir will have rehearsal dates June 12, 19, 26 and July 3 from 1-2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at 226 East Harvey Street. Supported by Boundary Waters Choral Arts with Mike Rouse directing. Questions can be sent to [email protected] Everyone is welcome to play MahJong at the Ely Community Center on Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m.
