Ely police force not as busy in May

The latest report from the Ely Police Department showed activity declined in comparison to the month before.

Numbers for May, released at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, showed that six cases were sent out and referred for formal charges.

That’s compared to 15 in April of this year.

Referred for charges were cases involving:

•Terroristic threats;

• Fifth-degree arson;

• Fifth-degree assault;

• Disorderly conduct;

• Littering;

• Warrant arrest. Four of those cases resulted in arrests with suspects lodged at the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia.

Police also wrote citations for driving after revocation, speeding, obstructing the legal process and failing to display ATV registration.

Ely officers also wrote 24 parking citations in May, down from 75 the month before.

During his report to the council, police chief Chad Houde also issued a public call to Ely residents to make sure their lawns are mowed.

Houde called it a “friendlly warning” to make sure gas is cut, noting the city ordinance limits yards to six inches or less of grass.

“We do send letters out and if you don’t respond or make an effort we can issue a citation, and if you don’t respond we can send a crew over to mow and it can be assessed to your taxes,” said Houde.
