Timber Bay and city council move forward with campground watercraft rental program

The City of Babbitt entered into an agreement with Timber Bay Lodge and Houseboats Monday morning to establish a watercraft rental program on the beach at the city campground.

In mid-August at the earliest, Timber Bay plans to offer two canoes, four stand-up paddleboards and four kayaks for rent at the campground.

Timber Bay’s proposal states the partnership will enhance the campground’s appeal, attract tourism and provide “a highly requested recreational amenity at zero financial cost to the city.”

“It’s a great idea,” said campground host Karissa LePine. “I’ve already had people asking if we rent equipment like that, so there’s definitely interest at the campground.”

“It’s a good way to support local businesses,” LePine said.

Timber Bay will handle equipment bookings and payment via their website and will retain all revenue. The city will provide a link to the system on the City of Babbitt website.

Customers will demonstrate proof of booking and a signed digital waiver to campground staff, who will then unlock the equipment.

The resort will pull the boats from their existing supply and will manage all insurance, cleaning and maintenance. Timber Bay will additionally provide paddles and personal flotation devices, as well as a lockable rack to protect against theft.

Council member Joe White does not anticipate significant challenges with theft, as the campground has not had issues with the life jackets currently stored at the beach. However, White said the city could look into purchasing a security camera and posting surveillance signage.

The rental program’s first season will offer Timber Bay and campground personnel the opportunity to sort out logistics and determine staffing arrangements for next summer.

Timber Bay representative Drew Prest said the program will offer the resort the opportunity to “take what was great from the past and grow into the future” as Timber Bay approaches its 80th season.

“Timber Bay, from what we’re seeing, is in a bubble with not a lot of access to Babbitt or Ely,” Prest said. “We want to open it up more year-round, and we want to respect the history and the people who have been coming there for years.”

Next steps will include sending the proposal to city attorney Joel Lewicki for review and drafting a formal agreement between Timber Bay and the City of Babbitt.

“It’s pretty exciting and a big thing for the campground,” White said.
