He says, would you mind if I brought my brother along, I said the more the merrier.
About nine-ish pm on a cool Friday evening the brother was a noshow, I slipped off to my tent and hit the hay. In the morning I rose, long before the sunrise, took my morning constitutional walk, and upon my return, here sits another pickup truck and I imagined it to be the errant sibling.
I went down to the lake, there strung like saloon horses tied to a fence rail was a laid-out stretch of six boats, dang nice thing to see in a sunrise.
Right there, the walleye chop, listening to the sound of water, mentally I just went somewhere in my head happy. I hear, “Good morning.”
I turned around, he introduced himself, I said, “You got in late.” Yup, well then you’re up early. He says, “Yeah, plenty used to it, learned that little trick from my uncle Sam.
“Me too.” “One of these boats yours?” Which I pointed to. He says, “How about I grab us some coffee and we get after those real early walleyes.”
I knew I was starting to like this guy; we were on the water so fast, and before anyone else was awake, we were back with two limits of walleyes. Man what a breakfast we all had.
We fished together for years, then his wife became a gramma. House of his life’s living sold, and they moved to be closer to the grandbaby.
He called me yesterday. “Think we could take the little feller up to that first lake we fished that time?”
I said, “Yeah, and I’ll have the coffee ready.”
