The Aug. 25 Lake County action meeting began with new updates on the Silver Rapids re-development project. The EAW (Environmental Assessment Worksheet) was completed and received at the end of June. The density requirements have been an issue, so the number of docks to be added was reduced to two and the Silver Rapids Lodge has committed to removing any leaking fuel tanks.
The Lake County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on September 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Law Enforcement Center, 613 Third Avenue, Two Harbors, MN 55616, and streaming at the Fall Lake Town Hall to discuss a conditional use permit and an application to plat land submitted by Silver Rapids Resort, LLC.
The Sheriff ’s department is moving forward with hiring at least one new deputy. Sheriff Stadler is retiring, a handful of deputies are on medical leave, and one more deputy may be leaving in October, so there was a request for a total of two candidates to be hired. The candidate pools are small, so filling positions can be difficult.
The meeting ended with a discussion about a new camping ordinance regarding public land. The ordinance limits the length of a stay on public land to 14 days for May through November, and 21 days for the rest of the year. There was a lot of public support for the ordinance from local community members.
