Garrett Mack and Ryan Kling built up a five stroke lead after the first 18 holes on Saturday and cruised to an impressive win on Sunday to dominate the 29th annual Scholarship Scramble. Their 36 hole score of 119 was 21 shots under par.
For the second year in a row the Youngman brothers, John and Mark, were runners up with 124. Kyle Lamppa and Matt Hupila took third with 127. Archie Bunker and Wade Klingsporn rounded out the championship flight places with 131. For Mack it was two wins in a row. Last year he teamed up with Jason Homer for the win.
The first flight was won by Steve and Katie Lynch -132, followed by Derrick Hammond/Justin Hirdler- 134, Roger and Troy Irwin 134, and Ben Novak/Joe Wenzel-137.
The second flight winner was the team of Jim and Tim Butler- 142 followed by Tom Sr./Tom Jr. Zbacnik-142; Powell/Traut 143, and K. Frankie. Setter 144.
Flight three was won by Mahoney/ Schulze 144, Avikainen/ Ezell 151, McDowell/Maki 153 and Murphy/Fitch 154.
The Taylor brothers, Steve and Sam, won the fourth flight with 150, followed by Merle Vandervest/Annie Barich 152, Schmidt/Ratzloff 152,andJohnBlauert/DeanMiller.
Dave Sherman and his daughter, Amanda Castro, won the final flight with 166. Jim and Ty lecher took 2nd -168, with third going to Brittany Curtiss/Michelle Wagoner 173, and fourth to Diane Serena/ Beth Hupila 173.
There were five skins won on Saturday. The Zbacnik’s eagled #11, Mack/Kling eagled #12 and birdied 16, Lamppa/Hupila birdied 15, and Hammond/Hirdler had an eagle on #17. Sunday’s play was a bit tougher, giving up just two skins. Lamppa/Hupila had a birdie on four. Mack/Kling had the other one with a birdie on 13.
The scramble featured 13 proximity prizes each day. Some of the notable ones on Saturday include a 36 foot 4 inch putt on #4 by Roger Irwin. Garrett Mack put his tee shot on #3, 9 feet 8 inches away while Jim Butler was 9 feet 4 inches away on #7.
Sunday had even more remarkable results. Derrick Hammond drilled a monster putt on #1 that traveled 49 feet, one inch! Archie Bunker put his tee shot on #3 within two feet five inches of the cup. That shot was outdone by Steve Tuomala who was just nine inches away from the cup on #7.
The two-day tournament held on Labor Day weekend attracted a capacity field of 54 two person teams for 108 players.
Proceeds go to scholarships for graduating seniors from Northeast Range High School. In the spring of 2026, $24,000 in scholarships were awarded to eight seniors. The total amount of scholarships awarded through the scholarship scramble to date is $264,000.
