At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. the program will be Get Crafty: Recycled CD Windchimes. Get ready to craft with Tricia and make some CD wind chimes. All supplies are provided. Registration is required as supplies are limited. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
The Opening Mass of the Cause of Canonization for Monsignor Joseph Buh will be on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Duluth. Buh was at one time based in Ely and served as a missionary priest who devoted his life to serving the people of northeastern Minnesota, especially Indigenous peoples and immigrant communities.
Learn what it means to be a volunteer singer with a dementia friendly choir on Sept. 22 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sheridan Street Deli. Ely and the surrounding area is kicking off the inaugural season for The Unforgettables and we would love for you to be a part of it.

At the Ely Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. the program will be Wild Rice with Annette Drewes. What do you know about North America’s disappearing wild aquatic grass, wild rice? Minnesota claimed wild rice as a state grain in 1977. Join wild rice ambassador Annette Drewes, PhD as she provides an up close look at the cultural collision over wild rice, and the lessons learned.
The Northern Lights 5k Color Glow Run Glow Fest will be on Friday Sept. 25, packet pickup and race day registration will begin at noon. Glow Fest is from 4-7 p.m. at Ely Community Hub before the race. New registrations are from noon to 5:45 p.m. Race day prices are $35 for adults, $25 for students and $15 for youth. The event is free to attend, with live music and fun activities for the kids.
At the Ely Public Library on Friday, September 25 at 1 p.m. the program will be Library Scientists: Chemistry - for kids geared towards pre-k - 3rd grade but all are welcome. Mixing things together – chemistry – is a common occurrence in everyday life, and giving children a vocabulary for talking about these fun experiments better equips them for understanding what happens in the world around them. Pre-register so there are enough materials.
The Unforgettables Dementia Friendly Choir will hold 10 week semesters with a concert in December and meets on Fridays, starting Sept. 25 through Dec. 6 (no rehearsal Nov. 27). Times are 1-3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Welcoming caregivers and partners, volunteer singers. Suggested participation fee of $20 per participant. For more information, contact: [email protected] or [email protected] The Ely Community Choir will hold its first Rehearsal on Sept. 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Ely Memorial High School Choir Room and will hold ongoing rehearsals.
Ely’s school board candidates will take to the stage at Vermilion on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in a forum moderated by the Ely Branch of AAUW Minnesota and the Ely Rotary Club.
The Ely Stone Stash will be Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. The possession limit is one, catch-n-release on all the rest. Trading is acceptable. This is a free, fine art event. Artists include Joe Baltich, Patty Shusta and Connie Edwards. Over 150 rocks will be stashed on public property and at 9 a.m. on Oct. 16, clues will be posted online.
