Field events fuel Ely win

Girls take first among four teams at Deer River event

Ely’s high school girls track team has both high-end talent and depth in the field events.

That was on display again Monday at Deer River, where the Timberwolves won a four-team meet with a dominant performance in field events.

Kaylin Visser, Addison Forsman and Sarah Visser all picked up first-place finishes in those events, while the Wolves added two seconds and three thirds as well.

Ely senior Grace La-Tourell added a victory in the 400 dash, while she also teamed with Lydia Shultz, Sarah Visser and Mattie Lindsay to win the fourby- 400 relay.

Those performances helped the Wolves collect 177 points, edging out Northome- Kelliher-Blackduck by 7.5 points to win the event. Deer River/Northland-Hill City and Bigfork lagged behind.

Kaylin Visser, the Ely freshman who is the defending section champion in the discus, had little trouble winning that event with a throw of 103 feet. She also took third in the shot put (27-1).

Forsman leaped to victory in the long jump (13-5), while Sarah Visser captured first place with a triple jump of 29-3.

The triple jump was an Ely sweep with Forsman (26-9) in second and Anna Dunn (26-2) in third, while Shultz placed second in the high jump at 4-6.

Ely’s Rachel Carter (7110) was third in the discus.

The Wolves also scored points in numerous other events, with LaTourell (1:05.7) and eighth-grader Violet Udovich (1:06.6) giving Ely both a first and a third in the 400.

Brophy was the runner-up in the 1,600 (6:43.4) and Dunn ran to a second-place finish in the 3,200 (15:00.3).

The Wolves also had two second-place relays, with Dunn combining with Alison Poppler, Stella Koivisto and Udovich in the fourby- 200 (2:11.9) and the all seventh-grade quartet of Ivy Ohlhauser, Kaija Shultz, Brynn Larson and Miram Messerschmidt second in the four-by-400.
