A group of 13 rising sixth grade students traveled to STARBASE Duluth at the 148th Fighter Wing on July 22.
They were one of the first groups to participate in a new one-day summer program. STARBASE offers handson learning focused on real world problem solving and STEM applications.
Students were engaged and inspired by the opportunity to use cutting edge technologies, scientific equipment and exploration of regional and local STEM careers.
Sponsored by AAUW, EMPOWER, and ECR, the group gathered in the wee hours of the morning to travel to the fast-paced program.
Back at home, Caden Fitzgerald said “At STARBASE, I learned that Mars is a near vacuum. My favorite activity was the vacuum chamber Mars homes! (A near vacuum sucks all air out of airy things.)” Annie Blomberg said, “We learned how to code rovers, watched videos about STEM careers and did a scavenger hunt on a CAD program. Also, learned how to keep a structure from expanding on Mars.”
