This Tuesday, Oct. 13, End of the Road Cookbook will officially be released.
My goal for the cookbook was to create a celebration of the local cuisine, and to hopefully reunite some readers with recipes similar to what their grandparents may have made.
You may also see some familiar faces and names, as I wanted to include as many of our region’s talented cooks as I could. Iron Range cuisine is a reflection of our heritage, and I didn’t feel right to take credit for all that our ancestors brought to the table.
The book includes a variety of ethnic recipes, local ingredients, and dishes of my own creation.
Aside from the standard pasties, pigs in a blanket (sarma), porketta, potica, and pulla recipes, there are also a few Native recipes, a section on BWCA cooking, and a run through of how to heat sausages in the sauna. I tried to give mentions to as many local food and beverage sellers as I could, as a way to let readers know what this area has to offer, and to help the businesses advertise their products.
I want to give a special thanks to the staff of The Ely Echo and The NewBabbittWeeklyNews for giving me the opportunity to share recipes with the public, which then gave me the experience needed to pitch my manuscript to the Minnesota Historical Society.
I would also like to thank everyone who has shared or expressed interest in sharing recipes in my columnandcookbook.Duetospace limitations, I was unable to feature all of the contributors recipes, but I hope to include more in future cookbooks.
The book is already on stands at Piragis Northwoods Company, and will also be at the Dorothy Molter Museum. For online purchases, the Minnesota Historical Society website is available. There will be upcoming book signings and events, but I will update about those later on. I do, however, wish to invite anyone interested to attend an event at the Minnesota History Center on November 15th, which can be found on the events page at mnhs. org. As a thanks to my readers, I am offering a 20% discount with the code NORTHLAND20. I hope to see you soon.
