Wanna go walleye fishing tomorrow? Sure. Ok I’ll pick you up at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Backing the boat in, the long shadow on the west shore was oozing out over the lake. We’d start backtrolling that shady water first off, by 8 p.m., we had two walleyes, and nice ones at that, by 9:30 p.m. there was very little sunlight left on the lake, swallows were cruising, the heat and humidity of the day were backing off, a nice respite to be sure, and then the bite got hot.
By 10:30 p.m. we had all the glowing eyes we wanted; bats were sabre’n the darkness, and back on shore not the least bit of breeze, the mosquitoes were almost a night haze, we packed up in a hurry.
Once out on the county trunk we opened the truck’s windows, a doe with a dappled fawn grazing roadside loomed in the headlights, I could tell he was tired as I was . I said when you drop me off, I’ll clean all the fish. Are you sure? I said no problem, thanks for asking me to come with.
His headlights fill the driveway as he departs, the stars are amazing, no moon tonight or it’s just not up yet. And after I clean the fish, I know I won’t be staying up any later to find out.
