Roger John David Anderson, 78, dies

Roger John David Anderson, 78, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016 in Lakewood, Colorado.Roger went to be with the Lord peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born October 10, 1938. He is preceded in death by his parents Lowell (Heinzie) and Helen (Burglund) Anderson who owned the Anderson egg farm long ago near Ely.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, camping and playing cards. In his later years he enjoyed flipping houses.
He left Minnesota in his 30s and lived in various states before moving back to Colorado to be near his children.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; 10 children: Diane Deblon, Linda Anderson, Connie Hughes, Kevin Anderson, David Anderson, Lori Taylor, Dave Bonham, Cindy Anderson, April Bonham and Daren Anderson; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and his sister Gayle Ginther.
He will be greatly missed and in our hearts always.

Robert Earl “Bob” Jordan, 79, of Eagles Nest Twp. dies

Robert Earl “Bob” Jordan, 79, of Eagles Nest Twp. died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 28, 2016. He was born March 4, 1937 in Urbana, IL the son of Harold and Margaret (Jackson) Jordan and graduated from High School in Champaign, IL in 1955. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois Champaign, a Master’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University, and a PhD from the University of Mississippi. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Dunn in Champaign, IL on August 29, 1959 and they were longtime residents of Champaign. Bob owned Central Illinois Seed Company in Charleston, IL for many years, was an Accounting Professor, and was a Certified Public Accountant. Bob attended the Ledgerock Community Church in Ely and the Embarrass Evangelical Free Church. He was a Ham Radio Operator (KB9AU), raised canaries, and led many Bible study classes. He loved living at the lake, and spending time with his canine companion, “Ginger”.

Diane C. (Laitinen) Jiacik, 68, dies

Diane C. (Laitinen) Jiacik, 68, Babbitt, passed away on May 1, 2016 at the Grand Village in Grand Rapids. Diane was born in Ely to Louis and Verna (Lassila) Laitinen on June 20, 1947. After she graduated from Ely High School in 1965, she worked various jobs, only to finally get her degree in cosmetology for which she had always had a passion for doing and was a hair stylist for many years.
She is survived by her two children: Annette (Ed) Stevens, and Robert “Cory” Taylor, her sister: Darlene (Bill) Liapis, step-children: Cathy (Doug) Furnstahl, Mike Jiacik and Patsy(Gregg) Osaben, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents Frank and Verna Loushin, and brothers: Gary Laitenen, and Dale (Diane) Loushin.

Julia M. Priyatel, 90, of Ely, dies

Julia M. Priyatel, 90, died May 2, 2016, at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
She was born June 21, 1925 in Ely, to Frank and Antonia Zaverl.
Julia attended Ely Memorial High School. She married Albert (Beanie) Priyatel in Ely on Sept. 1, 1947 and together they lived a rich, full life.
She was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, a volunteer at the Ely Nursing Home, and other civic organizations. She truly loved to create and share her talents.
Many thanks to Northwoods Care Partners for all of the services and friendship provided to Julia in the past years, the Boundary Waters Care Center for their wonderful care of Julia in the past months, an Essentia Health Hospice for their compassionate care of Julia in her final days.

Lisa (Lodahl) Palmehn, 57, dies

Lisa (Lodahl) Palmehn, 57, Richfield, passed away peacefully and surrounded with love,​ on April 21, 2016.
Lisa touched the lives of everyone she met. She was both inspiring and encouraging. Lisa loved spending time with her family - dancing, crafting, sewing, gardening and enjoying the outdoors in Ely. Her strength, courage and unconditional love was a true testament of her faith. Lisa continued to have and share faith in God in His plan and His glory​. Jo​hn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life
Survived by husband, Larry; children: Jennii, Laura (Dominick) Thibodeau, Jesi, Jacob; three granddaughters: Alyssa, Olivia and Avery;​mother, Dorothy Lodahl; in-laws, Bob and Kathy; siblings and many relatives and friends. Preceded in death by father, James Lodahl.
Memorial service 3:00pm Friday, May 6 at Colonial Church in Edina MN.​

Lee Edward Lilya, 81, of Burntside Lake, Ely, died Friday, April 22, 2016, in Duluth He was born and grew up in Soudan, taught school in Duluth. Survived by wife Marilyn, two children and eight grandchildren. Funeral is May 2 at 2 p.m. in Tower.

Clifford Elmer Ahlgren, 94, dies in Arizona

Clifford Elmer Ahlgren, 94, former director of The Quetico-Superior Wilderness Research Center and co-author of the book, “Lob Trees in the Wilderness”, died on April 19, 2016 at his residence in Sun City, Arizona.
Cliff was born in Toimi, Minnesota in 1922 and lived in the Duluth and Ely areas until his retirement. While director of the Wilderness Center, Cliff and his wife Isabel successfully developed a rust disease-resistant strain of White Pine.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Molly O. Ahlgren of Sitka, Alaska and is survived by his wife, Isabel F. Ahlgren of Sun City, Arizona; his son, Clifford L. (Nancy) of Buffalo, Minnesota and grandson, Samuel.

Vince was born to Edward and Anna (Wallace) Guck on August 9, 1928 in Perham, MN. He attended the Poser Country School District 211 in Homestead Township.
