Sharron Clasen, 77, of Ely and Little Canada, MN passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017 Preceded in death by husband Fred H. and parents George and Vera Dodd of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Survived by children Dodd (Sharon), Christopher (Tanya). Many nieces, nephews, and a million friends.


Alvin Clyde Lamppa, age 83 of Embarrass, dies

Alvin Clyde Lamppa, age 83 of Embarrass, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2017 at Carefree Living in Babbitt. He was born October 5, 1934 in Embarrass the son of Axel and Minnie (Hill) Lamppa. He was a graduate of Embarrass High School. Alvin was united in marriage to Janet Seppala on August 14, 1954 in Virginia, MN.

Alvin was the owner/operator of Lamppa’s, Inc., and together with his wife, Janet and son, Loren, owned the Cold Spot Bottle Shop. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, the Volunteer Fire Department, and bowling leagues in Babbitt and Virginia. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons playing basketball and football. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, and the cabin life on Birch Lake.


Olga M. Levar, 95, of Ely, dies

Olga Marie Levar, 95, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2017. She was a long-term resident of Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely where she enjoyed her caregivers’ friendship and her many games of Bingo.
She was born on September 5, 1922 in Ely, to John and Jennie Zgonc, and was a lifelong resident of Ely.
Olga attended Ely Memorial High School and married her husband, Matt Levar on September 15,1941. Olga was a life-long member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
She loved to cook and bake her favorite Slovenian dishes and who could resist her apple and walnut potica. Her deep-fried donuts were always a treat for her friends and family especially when they had just come out of the deep fryer. She loved to crochet and knit and made countless afghans, stocking caps and baby sweaters.


Paul O. Walker, 76, of Ely, dies

Paul O. Walker, born June 18, 1941, died at home November 6, 2017. He enjoyed every moment spent at Eagles Nest, in the woods, on the lake and with the good folks of Ely.


Carol Ann (Tomsich) Tegantvoort of Maplewood, 74, dies

Carol Ann (Tomsich) Tegantvoort of Maplewood, 74, passed away peacefully with family by her side after a 22 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Ely, Minnesota, on July 13, 1943. Carol was very proud of her Ely heritage. You could always see an “I Love Ely” sticker on her van and her scooter. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1961. On July 20, 1984 she received her nursing diploma from St. Paul TVI. Carol married Larry Tegantvoort in 1964 and was blessed with four children. Survived by sons Bradley (Jana), Kurt (Jill), Kevin (Sheri), and daughter Kari “Sis” (John) Knodle; grandsons: Tony, Johnny, Jorren, and Kai; granddaughters: Paige, Laurie (Dan) Furth, Alicia, and Ashley; brothers: Louis “Butch” (Linda) and Jack (Sue); numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, special friends, and extended family.


Karen Jean Leiviska, 69, of Ely, dies

Memorial service for Karen Jean Leiviska, 69, of Ely, formerly of Aurora, will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Ely with Pastor Corey Larsen officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Virginia Humane Society or Contended Critters.
Karen passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2017 at her home in Ely, MN.
Survivors include her children: Tara (Kevin) Boerst of Ely, Adam Leiviska of Virginia and Jenny Leiviska of Purcell, OK; grandchildren: Anika, Derrick and Amanda; great grandchild, Bentley; siblings: Johnny (Gwen) Wudinich of Virginia and Laurie (Tom) Cundy of Eveleth; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She is preceded in death by her parents: John and Geraldine (Inman) Wudinich; husband, Raymond and her sister, Marilyn Purell.


Amelia “Molly” Hill, 104, of Ely dies

AMELIA “MOLLY” MARIAN HILL, 104, died on Saturday, Novemmber 4, 2017 at the Ely Carefree Assisted Living faculty where she resided after a minor stroke in April 2009.
She was born September 1, 1913 at home in Ely to Slovenian immigrants John and Mary Horvat. Molly attended school in Ely through Jr. College. She was working at Pipestone Falls Fish Camp while dating Matt Hill who worked at Peterson’s Fish Camp on Basswood Lake. Matt was Lutheran and Molly Catholic so they got married by a Methodist Minister in 1935. They became members of the Ely Methodist Church when they moved from Winton to their newly built Ely home in 1952.
Molly is survived by sons William (Barbara) of Laguna Niguel, CA and Thomas (Sharon) of Fountain Valley, CA; granddaughters Linda Hill of Santa Ana, CA and Tracy Hill of Huntington Beach, CA; sisters Louise (Allen) Weins of Duluth, MN and Rose Leslie of Hermantown, MN; and, brother Albert Horvat of Tower,MN.

Betty Jayne Housey, age 86 of Delano, dies

Betty Jayne Housey, age 86 of Delano, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.
Betty was born on April 26, 1931 in Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Hilbert and Myrtle (Fibeig) Butzke. Betty was a 1949 graduate from Ely High School.
On September 12, 1949 she married Leonard Housey in Ely, MN. Together they had a son Randy, and daughter Robyn and resided in the Ely area. Betty enjoyed sled dog racing for many years.
Betty moved to Watertown, MN in 1987 and worked at the laundromat in Waconia and eventually Elim Home in Watertown for over 10 years. She was a girl scout troop leader. She loved cooking and baking, sewing, reading, gardening, house-keeping and chatting with the residents at Elim. Betty moved to Delano in 2010 and loved watching the MN Twins and Timberwolves on television. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
