Evelyn O. Hande, 97, of Minneapolis dies

Evelyn O. Hande, 97, of Minneapolis passed away on Monday April 28, 2014. Evelyn taught school for 25 years in Willmar and Minneapolis Southwest High School. She was a long time member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by husband, Edwin; parents. Oscar and Dora Ogrosky; and brother, Harold Ogrosky. She is survived by her children: Dr. Kenneth (Mary) Hande of Nashville, TN, Patricia (Ray) Hartman of Eagan, MN and Carol (Ross) Petersen of Ely, MN; grandchildren: Scott, Carolyn. Katherine, Reed. Sally, Beth and Andy; and eight great-grandchildren.

Leigh J. Dockendorf, 63, dies

Leigh J. Dockendorf,  63, of Brooklyn Center, MN died peacefully at home surrounded by family, on April 20,2014.
Leigh is survived by her husband Mark Dockendorf; brothers: Barry, Pete, and Lief; mother-in-law Mary Rozman of Babbitt, MN; sister-in-laws: Carol (Rob)Frost, Paula (Marvin) Jonas and Gwen Dockendorf; nieces; Brianna, Ana, Caitlin  and Elizabeth; nephews; Lief IV, Paul, Peter (Susan), Ryan (Becky) and Seth.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and sister-in-law (Roxanne Dockendorf).
In keeping with Leigh’s wishes...no services will be held.

Joseph Mathew Kovall, Jr., 86, dies

Joseph Mathew Kovall, Jr., 86, of Babbitt passed away Monday, April 21,  2014 at Carefree Living.
Joseph worked for Reserve Mining Company and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his loving wife Muriel; daughters: Ramona (Ron) Jokela and Dianne (Harold) Breffle; grandchildren: Justin (Ryan), Mathew (Tara), Kyle (Jessica) and Celeste (Zac); and great-grandson Hayden.
Private services and burial will be on May 9, 2014 at the Ely Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Dr. Paul Roy Leon, 85, dies

Dr. Paul Roy Leon, 85, died April 11, 2014 in Aberdeen, SD. He attended Ely schools in childhood. He is survived by six children, 28 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Barbara. He enjoyed camping in the Boundary Waters with his family. He had a life-long enjoyment of music, hunting, reading, snowmobiling, skiing, lakeside living and traveling. His wife Therese preceded him in death.

Brenda Molly Bobence, 50, dies

Brenda Molly Bobence, 50, went home to meet her savior on Easter Day, Sunday April 20, 2014. Brenda was born in Minneapolis, MN to Robert Nadeau and Mary Gresly on April 17, 1964. Brenda grew up in Ely and she graduated from Ely Memorial High School. She has lived on her own in Fergus Falls, MN for many years. She was previously married to Paul Koski and later married Mike Bobence.
She enjoyed making people laugh. She was always the first to tell a joke or try to lighten your mood. Brenda loved animals and for the past several years, she volunteered at the Fergus Falls Human Society. She adopted a dog named Milo and he was very special to her.
Brenda is survived by her children: Katherine Koski, Scott Koski and Daniel Bobence; three granddaughters; two grandsons; sister Gena (Gresly) Rees, brother Erick Gresly, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Clarice Irene Haapala, 78 of Babbitt, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 20, 2014.
She was born in Ely to Ralph and Lilian (Waisanen) Maki.  Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Rudy Rom, brother Clyde Maki, sister-in-law Margie Maki and grandson Neil Haapala.

James (Jim) David Loushin, 76, of Babbitt dies

James (Jim) David Loushin, 76, of Babbitt went to his heavenly home Friday, April 18, 2014 at Carefree Living Memory Care in Babbitt.
Jim was born and raised in Ely, delivered papers and worked for the Standard gas station. Following graduation, he worked in Pioneer Mine and served in the US Army in Heidelberg, Germany. Upon his return, he worked for many years as a mechanic for Reserve Mining Company, Aysta Dairy and LTV.
Jim married Jean (Schmid) in Tower in 1963. They made their home in Babbitt where they raised their six children.
Jim had a strong trust in the Lord and was a faithful member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for nearly 50 years.

Lyman Curtis Childers, 88, of Ely dies

Lyman Curtis Childers, a.k.a. Pete Zebich, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.After a 6 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis, Lyman passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 14, 2014, with his family around him.  
Lyman was born in Pillager, Minnesota. He was in the class of 1943 at Ely Memorial High School.  In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Seabees in the South Pacific during WWII.  He attended junior college before and after his years in the service.
Lyman’s first job was as a gandy dancer on the railroad for Henry Nickolson.  After returning from WWII, he was the very first employee at Bill Rom’s Canoe Country Outfitters.  Throughout his years in Ely, Lyman worked as a surveyor, fishing guide, at the Ely Miner, and at Reserve Mining Company.

Richard Scott Freeman, 59, of Ely, dies

Richard Scott Freeman, 59, of Ely, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 at his home. He was born January 15, 1955 in Wichita Falls, Texas to John Clark and Jean Levorsen Freeman. He graduated from Rider High School in Wichita Falls in 1973 where he was a varsity tennis player and won the State High School Doubles Championship his senior year.  He went to college at the University of Texas in Austin where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and majored in Petroleum land Management. Following graduation in 1977 he worked as an Oil & Gas Landman in Houston and South Texas while attending night school at South Texas School of Law in Houston and later became a member of the Texas State Bar specializing in oil and gas. In 1989 Dick moved from Houston to Ely, where his great grandparents had emigrated in the 1880s and where the family owned property on Burntside lake, He married Monica Boudreaux in Ely on June 9, 1990 and had two sons: Michael and Jeremy.
