Berna Seliskar, 85, of Ely, dies

Berna L Seliskar, 85, of Ely died suddenly on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 24, 1929 in Ely to Tynie and Otto Tjader. She attended Ely schools, graduating with salutatorian honors. She married August Seliskar Jr on April 5, 1948. Together they owned and operated the family-built business, Pine Point Lodge on White Iron Lake while raising their family. The coffee pot was always on at Berna’s home. She always welcomed visits from many friends and especially enjoyed and loved her family. She loved berry picking, gardening, knitting, raking and always shared the fruits of her labor. She was a charter member of a Sewing Club for more than 60 years which started over a cup of coffee with a group of friends and expanded over the years.


Catherine (Moroni) O’Brien, 76, dies

Catherine (Moroni) O’Brien, 76, beloved of Pat, went to God’s Glory on June 10, 2014. She was born November 1, 1937 to Peter and Frances Moroni and grew up in Ely. She graduated from The College of St. Catherine (now St. Catherine’s University). She married Patrick O’Brien to whom she was married for 53 years. She was pre-deceased by Patrick as well as her parents.
She is survived by her children Peggy Prall (Rob), Amy Turnquist (Rob), Mitzi Larson (Randy), Patrick O’Brien (Anne), Peter O’Brien (Diane), Andrew O’Brien (Francie), Joseph O’Brien (Heather) and Matthew O’Brien (Kristi) as well as sister Mary Carolyn Farrell (Ken), Barbara Johnson (Fred) and Christine Moroni and brother Peter G. Moroni. She and Patrick had 33 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She worked with her husband in their business, Actuarial Consulting Services for 32 years.


Eloise M. Wiermaa, 75, dies

Eloise M. Wiermaa, 75, of Ely, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Carefree Assisted Living in Babbitt.
She was born on May 31, 1939, in McKinley Township in Wisconsin to Wayne and Helen (Herrick) Myers and grew up there and graduated from the Chippewa Falls High School.
On April 11, 1959, she married Donald Wiermaa of Ely in Chippewa Falls, Wis., and they had resided in Ely since their wedding.
Eloise worked as a cook at Vertin’s Cafe in Ely and enjoyed making ceramics, baking, and her specialty was baking blueberry pies and pasties. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Ely; served on the church council and sang in the church choir; Eastern Star; Mother’s Auxiliary for youth activities and was a member of the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital Auxiliary.


Gloria B. Miller, 79, dies

Gloria B. Miller peacefully passed away in his home on Burntside Lake on Thursday, June 5, 2014 with her family at her side. Born in Harrisburg, PA in 1934, she spent most of her younger years in Drexel Hills, Pennsylvania.
Gloria met her husband, William, while he was singing in the Princeton Seminary choir at her home church in Drexel Hill, PA. It was love at first sight and they were married a year later on December 19, 1953 in the same church. They moved to Florida where their two oldest were born, then moved to Cedar Grove, NJ, where their two youngest were born.
Gloria attended the Florida Southern College and Montclair State College. Her strong belief in the value of formal education gave her foresight to not only to make provisions for her children, but also to establish trust accounts for her five grandchildren to help enable them to attend college.


Charles A. “Chuck” Mikolich, 76, dies

Charles A. “Chuck” Mikolich, 76, Maple Grove. died June 7, 2014 at North Memorial Medical Center, Robbinsdale, MN.  
Born September 23, 1937 in Ely, Chuck was a retired social studies teacher in the Robbinsdale School District.    He enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting.  
He is urvived by his wife, Judy; children: Joel (Terri), Cullen (Sara), Paul (Julie); step-children: Chad (Amy) Hoseth, Allison (Tim) Rose; grandchildren: Madison, Matthew, Michael, Lauryn and Camryn Mikolich, Noah and Henry Hoseth, Tyler and Megan Rose; sister: Dolores (Dick) Faas.  He was preceded in death by parents: Anton and Angela; sister,: Patricia Smrekar.


Myron Henry Laine, 68, of Anoka, MN dies

Myron Henry Laine, 68, of Anoka, MN passed away on June 5, 2014.
He was born April 30, 1946 in Ely to Toivo and Lyylli Laako Laine and attended school in Ely.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gail (Benko) Laine.
He is survived by his brother David and sister Luella; son Barry, daughter Minde and grandson Blake.

Adelaide Loretta (Harris) Pucel, 88, dies

Adelaide Loretta (Harris) Pucel, 88, formerly of Ely, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born April 24, 1926 in Brooklyn,N.Y. to Samuel and Adelaide Harris.
She met a sailor, Johnny Pucel, and married him Nov, 1946 when he got  a medical discharge from the Navy and they moved to Ely.
She was a waitress at Vertin’s Café and later the caretaker for Johnny until his death in 1988, later caring for his relatives.
She loved entertaining at home  and polka dances.
She is survived by daughter: Kathie and son-in-law Ron; grandsons and their wives: Jeremy and Rene, Garret, and Chris and Anne; grandchildren: Shayne and Piper Jo, Ben, Sylvie and Gabe and Liam, Ethan and Chris Jr.; brother-in-law Bob and sister-in-law Agnes; nieces and nephews; good friend Barb and girls and Echo.Preceded in death by husband John, grandson Shayne and Reno.
She brought sunshine into people’s lives. A great woman.


Jane Violet (Soderberg) Pucel dies

Jane V. (Soderberg) Pucel passed away in Ely Monday, June 2. 2014.  
Born in Soudan, MN in 1919, she attended the Tower-Soudan schools and as a young lady worked at the Tower Box Factory business office.  Jane married Fred Pucel in 1954 and moved to Ely where she resided until her death.  Jane also worked for many years at Lampert Lumber Company in Ely and later at Boundary Waters Canoe Outfitters.  
She was proud of her Swedish heritage and was a member of the Eastern Stars for over sixty years.  A terrific cook specializing in Swedish and Slovenian foods, she always had something for visitors to munch on or take home.   When not at the cabin at Clear Lake you would find her knitting, picking berries, cooking or talking on the phone with friends discussing local news.  


Dardanella R. Pollock, 95, of Jefferson City, Mo., dies

Dardanella  R. Pollock, 95, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Heisinger Bluffs.
Dardanella was born July 3, 1918 in Ely, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Helen Popovich Milkovich.  She was married on December 7, 1942 in Kansas City, MO to Lt. Colonel Carl A. Pollock who preceded her in death in 2002.
She graduated from Ely Memorial High School and has been a resident of the Jefferson City area for the past fifty years.
A homemaker, she had been employed with the Cole County Clerk’s office for several years.
Dardanella was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Jefferson City Newcomers, the X-Club, and numerous bridge clubs.


Edgar A. Mulhollam, 88, dies

Edgar A. Mulhollam, 88, passed away at Golden Living Center-Greeley in Stillwater, Minnesota on April 29, 2014. Ed was born in Spring Valley, Wisconsin on July 18, 1925.
Ed attended grammar and high school in the Spring Valley area graduating from Spring Valley High. Ed briefly attended the University of Minnesota before being drafted into the US Army during World War II. He saw action in the European Theater in both Italy and France. Ed was awarded the Purple Heart for the wounds he received in France and spent a lengthy recovery period in multiple US hospitals.
Ed continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he met his wife Edith Bohince of Ely. He worked many years as a Financial Analyst for a major industrial electronics firm in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent most of his retirement years in Ely, Minnesota. He recently moved to the St. Paul, Minnesota area to be closer to family members.
