Mary R. Murn “Mickie” (AKA Mary Bouska) , 93, dies

Mary R. Murn “Mickie” (AKA Mary Bouska) said goodbye to her family on Saturday, April 21, at the age of 93. She died of complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was married to the love of her life Thomas G. Murn for 68 years. They grew up just blocks apart in Ely, Mn, and shared a love of the north woods and fishing together on Fall Lake and on Basswood Lake. They watched the birds and animals from the cabin windows and on walks through the woods, enjoyed reading, saunas and a good fish fillet. Mickie baked and shared the best bread, cookies and rolls with family and friends and spent her life giving to others.
She is deeply loved by her eight children Melanie; Mary Erickson (Steve); Thomas Jr. ( Patty); Shannon Kowalkowski (Dave); Tracy; Patrick (Kathy); Carey Moe (Mark); preceded in death by son Michael “Kelly” (Ginny). Grandma Mickie was adored by 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Jerome Baudek, 61, of Chandler, AZ, formerly of Ely, dies

Jerome (Jerry) Baudek, 61, of Chandler, AZ died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Jerry was born March 24, 1957 in Winton, MN. He graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1975. Jerry was always involved in athletics and was a letterman in swimming and golf. After high school he worked briefly at Erie Mining.
Jerry’s deep-rooted love of Minnesota did not waiver, but his passion for golf and warm climates led him to Florida in the early ’80s and then to Arizona in the mid-’90s. Jerry was an ardent golfer. He worked in food preparation and bartending at T.G.I. Friday’s for ten years, in sales for several years, and then found satisfaction as a house painter the rest of his working years. In his spare time he enjoyed refinishing furniture, and his attention to detail and craft precision were apparent in all his works.

Katherine A. “Kay” Klabe, 100, of Ely dies

Katherine A. “Kay” Klabe, 100, of Ely died peacefully on March 27, 2018 at her home.
She was born on November 30, 1917 in Ely to Steve and Katherine (Jaketic) Golobich and attended school there. Following high school graduation, she moved to Chicago to visit friends and search for a job. Kay quickly found work in the big city and began her career in the corporate insurance and administrative field.
On September 29, 1952 she married Milton L. Klabe of Chicago, where they made their home. Kay worked at the National Can Corporation from which she retired in 1978 with over 25 years of service. Upon retirement, Kay and Milt moved to Ely, where she enjoyed gardening, walking, reading, traveling, and meeting and conversing with people.

Edward A. “Ed” Klancher, 91, Hibbing, dies

Edward A. “Ed” Klancher, 91, Hibbing, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 in the Guardian Angels Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing, under the compassionate care of Fairview Range Hospice and loving family members. Ed was born in Ely, MN on March 21, 1927 to Anton and Frances (Urbas) Klancher. He was a 1945 graduate of Ely Memorial High School, served in the US Army and graduated from St. Cloud Teacher’s College in 1953. He taught in Hibbing, first at Washington school in North Hibbing and then at the Greenhaven school. While teaching he was also the sporting goods manager for Gibson’s, Shopko and then Pamida. He retired from teaching in 1992. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Wilma Ruth (Bierbaum) Zimmerman, 82, of Brownsville, TX, dies

Wilma Zimmerman
Wilma Ruth (Bierbaum) Zimmerman, 82, of Brownsville, TX, formerly of Litchfield, entered into Heaven on Apr. 7, 2018. She was born on Sept. 1, 1935 to Charles W. and Minnie (Hartke) Bierbaum. A 1953 graduate of Litchfield High School, she married C. L. (Kelly) Zimmerman on Feb. 20, 1954. She enjoyed spreading God’s word, spending time with family, sewing, baking, travel and bringing joy to everyone she met. Wilma loved classical music.  She was very active in the church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She is survived by: her loving husband of 64 years, C. L. Zimmerman; daughters, Lynne Zimmerman; Julie (Mike) Meier; Susan (Glen) Cornman; Nancy (Rick) Nunez; a son, Michael (Mari) Zimmerman; brother, Charles (June) Bierbaum; sister-in-law, Joan Jones; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
